I am feeling a bit foolish this week. I knew that the first potatoes we planted outdoors a few weeks ago had broken through the soil and I also knew that we were expecting some frost. What I failed to do was connect these two facts in my mind, so left the potatoes unprotected.
On a chilly Thursday morning I realised the error of my ways when doing the morning rounds. A number of the young plants were showing frost damage. We were lucky, though, as it appears as though the damage is not too extensive and I am hopeful that they may recover quickly. I have now covered them with a row of fleece; stable doors and bolted horses, etc. On a brighter note, we enjoyed the first potatoes from our pot grown specimens. These have been happy in the glasshouses, where they have avoided the frost.
